Mayo greenway project is now suspended

.

Plans for a 60km high-quality greenway linking the towns of Ballina, Castlebar and Westport are currently suspended.

Mayo County Council's Director of Services David Mellett revealed the information at a meeting of the council's Roads and Sustainable Travel Strategic Policy Committee.

Delivering a presentation on a long list of projects planned across Mayo by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), Mr Mellett noted that the programme relates not only to national roads but also greenways and active travel, road safety schemes, bridge management, repair and renewal of pavements and management of signage and delineation across the county’s road network.

Road projects completed or under construction include the N5 Westport to Turlough Road project; the N60 Heathlawn Project; and the N59 Derrada to Mulranny Road Project (phase 1).

Road projects at design stage include the N26 Ballina Bypass (phase 1); the N26 Mount Falcon to Foxford Road Project; the N58 Foxford Transport Project; the N60 Manulla Cross project; the N59 Derrada to Mulranny Road Project (phase 2); the N17 Knock to Collooney Transport Project; and the N84 Ballinrobe Transport Project (which did not receive TII funding in 2026).

TII Active Travel and Greenway projects currently under construction include the N60 Breaffy Active Travel scheme, the Blacksod Greenway Loop, a 250-metre greenway link at Attireesh in Westport, and annual greenway asset renewal works, such as in relation to fencing, surfacing and signage.

Greenway projects at design stage include new sections for Newport Town, a 5.4km extension from Cashel to Bunacurry in Achill, active travel infrastructure along both sides of the N60 from Pollavaddy to Balla (which did not receive TII funding in 2026); while the Ballina-Castlebar-Westport interurban greenway that was to provide a 60km high-quality greenway linking the three towns is currently suspended.

Road safety schemes include the N5 Swinford Bypass Safety Scheme; the R375 Kilkelly Relief Road and R322 Junction Improvement, while a number of smaller safety projects have also been completed or are under consideration.

Mr Mellett arranged for a special SPC meeting in October to allow for a detailed discussion on the programme.
