Lights on bridge 'should have been green and red' for Mayo win
Christy Hyland raised the matter at the SPC meeting.
The lights on the bridge in Westport should have shown the red and green of Mayo following the senior football team’s All-Ireland win.
Christy Hyland, a member of the Roads and Sustainable Travel SPC of Mayo County Council, made the comments at a meeting of the forum last week, saying he was disappointed that the lights, which were funded by councillors’ General Municipal Allocation money, were not being maintained as they ought to be.
He stated: “The lights on the bridge are not being looked after. They should turn different colours for different causes, and I am very disappointed they were not turned green and red for the year that is in it. Those lights cost €28,000 but now, when they change colour they stay that way for a long time and there is no acknowledgement of special awareness days, such as for Autism Awareness Day, when they should be yellow.” Senior Engineer Peter McLoughlin said the matter was not within the remit of an SPC and was something that would be managed locally, with Director of Services David Mellett saying he would refer the matter to the Westport Belmullet MD.
