Marty hails money raised by ‘Friends of Darragh’

James Shaughnessy of Claremorris was named Player of the Tournament following his side's overall victory at the Friends of Darragh 7-a-side competition hosted by The Neale GAA Club.
A hugely successful resumption of the Friends of Darragh football tournament took place this month at the home of The Neale GAA Club in Lisloughrey, Cong. The competition, which commemorates the life of Darragh Walsh, who tragically passed away in 2013 at the age of 22, made its long-awaited return and raised an impressive €3,475 for the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust.
The cup winners were Claremorris Whites and The Neale Greens won the shield.
Ten teams from six clubs took part, with Ballinrobe, Shrule/Glencorrib, Tourmakeady and Clonbur also involved.
RTÉ Sport commentator Marty Morrissey hailed the return of the Friends of Darragh seven-a-side tournament, saying: “Any fundraising is going to the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust, so it is a worthy cause. I’d like to say well done to The Neale GAA club – continue on the good work.”
The Friends of Darragh tournament has become a beloved tradition for The Neale GAA, bringing together clubs for more than just a sporting event. Since 2017 the tournament has served as a fundraiser for the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust, with all proceeds raised going towards this important cause.
Gerry Walsh, Darragh’s father and one of the tournament organisers, expressed his gratitude to everyone involved.
“It was fantastic to see so many people come out and support the tournament. The Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust is a charity very close to our hearts and to be able to raise such a substantial amount is truly heartwarming,” said Gerry. “On behalf of The Neale GAA and my family, I would like to thank all the clubs involved and everyone who contributed to such a memorable day.”
The Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust aims to alleviate the financial hardship of bereaved families repatriating the bodies of loved ones who have died abroad in sudden or tragic circumstances back to Ireland.
