Passing of much-loved former Mayo shopkeeper
The late Kathleen O'Malley
A Mayo woman who ran a shop that was an institution in Castlebar for many years has passed away.
Kathleen O’Malley, of Rathbawn Road and formerly of O’Malley’s Shop, McHale Road, Castlebar and Falduff, Louisburgh, passed away peacefully at The Ross Suite at The Sacred Heart Hospital.
Kathleen was pre-deceased by her husband Kevin. Together the couple ran O’Malley’s shop on McHale Road.
The shop and its owners became icons on ‘The Road’ in the county town.
Kathleen’s late husband was also a leading figure in the Fine Gael organisation and the community in Castlebar.
Fond memories of Kathleen and O’Malley’s shop were posted online following the news of her passing.
“Kathleen would always be sitting inside the Counter and her beloved Husband Kevin would never be far away in the shop. Provided an exceptional service to the people of McHale Road while in business on the road,” read one message of sympathy.
Kathleen is deeply regretted by her daughter Karen, sons Damien, Jarlath, Aidan and Conor, brother Patrick, sisters Mary Sheridan, Una Keating and Irene Duffy, grandchildren, great grandchildren, son in law, daughters in law, family circle, neighbours and friends.
Reposal takes place at Coady’s funeral home tomorrow from 5.30pm until 7pm. Funeral Mass takes place at the Church of the Holy Rosary, Castlebar on Thursday at 11am with burial afterwards in Castlebar New Cemetery.
