'Phonefind' technology was key to Mayo rescue operation

Mayo Mountain Rescue (MMR) recently responded to their first callout of 2025.
At 5.45pm on January 5, the team were called out to assist two walkers on the Letterkeen trail in the Wild Nephin National Park.
The walkers took a wrong turn and headed up towards the Nephin Beg mountain. Realising it was getting dark, they dialled 999 and requested assistance from the MMR team.
The team were able to locate them with phonefind technology and guided them to Lough Aroher Hut.
A first response team drove up on the rough forest trail and located the couple at the hut. They received care and transport back to the Letterkeen carpark. MMR stood down at 8pm.
The MMR Team responded to over 30 callouts in 2024. They advised anyone going hiking to prepare for all conditions and to not hesitate to dial 999 to request Mountain Rescue assistance if needed.
