The new toilets at the car park in Murrisk beside Croagh Patrick will be “absolutely beautiful”, according to a Mayo councillor.
Cllr Christy Hyland said that the toilets are 90% completed and it will be “great to see” for locals and tourists. He said over 100,000 people visited Croagh Patrick a year, and that the old toilets were substandard.
“The toilets that were in it were like something you’d see in a prison camp in the 1950s. But to see the great work going on up there is fantastic.” Cllr John O’Malley’s son worked on the project as tiler and said that the whole building should have been demolished and recontructed.
Head of the Westport-Belmullet Municipal District, Padraic Walsh said they could not demolish the building because there was a tight window with the funding provided.
