New future for iconic Mayo building
The former post office building in Castlebar.
Members of Mayo County Council have approved the lease of the old Post Office building at Mountain View in Castlebar to Foróige, which plans to use it as a dedicated Community Youth Resource Centre.
Proposing the lease at the September meeting of the council, Cllr Ger Deere said he was delighted at last to see the project moving on, as committees down through the years - and specifically the Castlebar Community Development Association, headed up by Paddy McGuinness - had been working on the project for almost 40 years. Funding of €180,000 has been secured for the project.
“There is a perception this is a Mayo County Council project, but it is in fact Castlebar Development Association and I would like to see them acknowledged on the planning," he said, also thanking the architecture team for their involvement.
Cllr Blackie Gavin seconded the lease proposal, equally paying tribute to all involved and adding: “This is great for Castlebar and the county and I am delighted the old Post Office is being redeveloped. It is a wonderful facility and will be of great help to young people, as in today’s world, it is very important for young people’s mental health to meet each other.”
