Enormous shock as champions crash out of championship
Maria Cannon and her Burrishoole teammates pulled off a massive shock when beating Westport in the Mayo LGFA Senior Championship semi-final.
Two in a row winners Westport have been dumped out of the Mayo LGFA Senior Championship at the semi-final stage by West Mayo rivals Burrishoole. What’s more, the shock result on Saturday afternoon occurred on Westport’s home patch.
Burrishoole had held a two points advantage at half-time, 0-8 to 0-6, but the home side flipped things when scoring a couple of goals after the restart to lead 2-07 to 0-9. But rather than the odds-on favourites push on for victory, Westport found themselves reeled in by the 2002 champions Burrishoole who, inspired in part by Maria Cannon's accuracy, outscored the home side 1-3 to 0-1 down the stretch to record a famous 1-12 to 2-08 win.
The other semi-final takes place on Sunday afternoon between Knockmore and Kilmovee Shamrocks.
