First semi-finalists confirmed on Super Saturday
Castlebar Mitchels captain John MacMonagle and his Aghamore counterpart Conor Hunt with match referee James Regan.
Garrymore and Castlebar Mitchels are the first two teams into the hat for the semi-finals of the Connacht Gold Mayo Senior Football Championship following Saturday’s quarter-final action.
Garrymore made the most of home advantage in front of an estimated 3,000 attendance in the South Mayo townland, to beat Crossmolina Deel Rovers 0-14 to 0-12.
Garrymore had made most of the running but with the sides level after 56 minutes, it was points by Mark Gibbons and Cathal Slattery that saw them across the line. Crossmolina had a couple of late opportunities to level matters again and force extra-time but Kobe McDonald’s and Jordan Flynn’s efforts failed to hit the target.
Castlebar Mitchels were the first team into the semi-final hat following an impressive victory away to Aghamore earlier on Saturday. Mitchels won 0-19 to 1-10, with impressive displays by all their county players, Paddy Durcan, John MacMonagle, Donnacha McHugh, Sean Morahan and Bob Tuohy, the latter ably assisted at midfield by Ultan O’Reilly, with James Durcan catching the eye in attack.
Neither Garrymore or Castlebar can meet in the semi-finals as they have already met in the group stages so will play either of the winners of Sunday’s semi-finals: Breaffy v Westport, Claremorris v Belmullet.
The Mayo SFC Relegation Final will see Ballaghaderreen and Balla lock horns. Ballagh’ were swept aside by Charlestown Sarsfields on Saturday afternoon while Balla succumbed to Balla in their semi-final playoff on Friday night.
