Mayo feels the impact of “unprecedented” storm
The roof of an outdoor seating area at Market Square, Castlebar, was floored by the storm.
Storm Éowyn has left hundreds of thousands of homes, businesses and farms across the country without power.
ESB Networks has said that it could take over a week to get every area back on the grid, stating that the damage caused by the storm is "unprecedented".
Other problems caused by the storm involve the country's water supply, with approximately 150,000 premises in Ireland at risk of water supply issues due to power outages affecting the water network.
Irish Water said the majority of these customers should still have water due to storage in reservoirs.
The agency said significant disruption is expected due to Storm Éowyn, adding that its crews will begin restoring supply when it is safe to do so.
The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) is urging that the immediate clean-up operation be left to professional operators to undertake the work safely.
The HSA said that while well-intentioned members of the public may be tempted to help, it strongly advises that only trained and competent operators equipped with the necessary personal protective equipment handle items such as chainsaws.
"If you don't have the proper training or equipment to safely use a chainsaw, don’t take the risk and instead engage with emergency and professional services," Mark Cullen, Chief Inspector with the HSA, said.
Many Mayo homes remain without power and phone coverage.
Mayo County Council crews have begun the clean-up operation and have reported blocked roads and fallen trees across the county.
