Mayo community shows ‘democracy in action’
A community-led campaign by residents has successfully brought forward plans to install road safety measures along the R323 Knock to Kiltimagh Road.
Speaking at a meeting of Claremorris and Swinford Municipal District, Cllr Deirdre Lawless highlighted the efforts of residents from the Carrowmore North and Carrowmore Meadows housing estates, who came together after raising concerns about safety along the route. After several months of representations, residents carried out their own speed review and organised a petition calling for the road to be relined and stop signs to be installed.
Cllr Lawless said she was impressed by the initiative and thanked Kathleen Henry, Eileen Carney, Rita Canty and Con Canty for organising the survey and gathering signatures from residents. She commended the residents for showing “people power”, saying they had become “fed up of asking” for action to be taken.
“They came together, did the speed review and got the petition. It's democracy in action, and it's wonderful to see the community be engaged with that.”
The councillor said the campaign showed what can be achieved when a local community comes together to highlight an issue and push for change. She also thanked the Mayo Roads Office for responding to the concerns. The road is set to be relined and stop signs installed shortly.
