Mayo community rallies behind beloved local woman

Breege Canavan is a beloved member of the local community in Belcarra
The community in Belcarra have rallied behind one of their own in an attempt to help her return home following year-long treatment for an acute medical condition.
In December 2023, local woman Breege Canavan faced the condition which resulted in permanent, life-changing consequences. This condition has affected her mobility and functionality, making it impossible for her to fully participate in her role as a wife, mother, grandmother, and sister.
After completing a rehabilitation program, Breege is now preparing to return home in the coming weeks. While her family are excited for her return, they face significant challenges in adapting their home, securing transportation, and providing full-time care.
The local community have come together to rally behind Breege and her family, husband Micheál and four sons Alan, Paddy, Mark and Evan, six grandchildren and extended family.
Breege has been a dedicated member of the community, spearheading initiatives such as the establishment of the Belcarra Lotto and local development projects and the local Community Council have set up a fundraiser to support one of their most loyal volunteers.
All funds raised will go towards ongoing costs associated with Breege’s care and the necessary adaptations to her home and transportation. The fundraiser, set up earlier this month, has raised close to €50,000.
“The Belcarra community, who has benefited so much from Breege’s selfless contributions over the past 30 years, is coming together to support her and her family during this difficult time,” the Community Council said.
“This GoFundMe page has been set up to raise funds for the ongoing costs associated with Breege’s care and the necessary adaptations to her home and transportation.”
Local soccer club Manulla FC, with whom the Canavan’s have a long association, have also stepped up to support Breege and her family. The club will donate all of their Lotto sales to the fundraiser for the next two weeks.
