Windows smashed and badly damaged at the Sisters of Mercy Convent Ballina.

An incident of vandalism has occurred at the former Sisters of Mercy Convent in Ballina.

It is understood the incident, which saw windows smashed and badly damaged, occurred last night at the historic premises.

The building was handed over to the community by the Sisters last year and is currently undergoing an intensive renovation process that has seen the roof of the building saved from collapse and a series of works carried out to arrest wet and dry rot that threatened the future of the building.

The Convent has no connection to the nearby former premises of St Mary's Secondary School, which is in private ownership.

The incident is currently being investigated by An Garda Síochana.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Ballina Garda Station at 096 20550.
