Traffic accident victim offers thanks to staff at hospital for their ‘kindness and care’

Staff at Mayo University Hospital have been praised for their treatment of a traffic accident victim.
Dear Editor I wish to express my gratitude to the staff of the Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar. They often get such bad press and so seldom are acknowledged for their hard work and dedicated care they give to all their patients.
I attended the A&E recently (23 July) following a road traffic accident. First I was treated with the height of respect by the young woman in the office as she received my doctor’s letter. I had the usual wait as others were before me but thankfully not too long as I was in a lot of pain and discomfort.
Then I was called by the Triage Nurse who was so nice and kind to me, a beautiful Indian nurse called Ailan. She took my blood pressure and immediately saw how much pain I was in. She made every effort to get me into a cubicle where I could lie down and gave me painkillers. She had another kind Indian doctor examine me who treated me with the utmost respect and kindness. I needed an X-ray and was taken there by the lovely Donal Geraghty and then back to the cubicle.
My angel nurse Ailan offered me tea and toast which I declined because I was unable to eat. My Indian doctor returned to administer pain relief patches. (I’m sorry I am unable to remember this lovely doctor’s name.) These doctors and nurses work under such pressure. They are attending to patients, dealing with paperwork, handling emergencies and traffic accidents, and yet they do their work with such dignity and kindness.
Well done all the hardworking staff nurses, doctors and support staff of the Mayo General Hospital. I am also grateful to my own doctors, Caroline Cowley and Hugh Ó Faoileáin, and therapist Derrick Reape for all their wonderful service and kindness to me and all who pass through their doors.
With grateful thanks, Tina Geraghty, Carrowbawn, Westport.
