High praise for Mayo's X-ray service

A Mayo councillor has praised the X-ray service in place at Mayo University Hospital, describing it as "top class”.

Cllr Michael Kilcoyne told the June meeting of the Regional Health Forum West and North West that he had reason to attend the X-ray department recently.

"I was taken in a couple of minutes before my time and was through and out again in about ten minutes. It is an excellent service, and I am not the only one who has had a similar experience of it. They send the results to your doctor within a couple of hours, it is certainly top class.”

Cllr Kilcoyne also welcomed the high number of patient visits to the mobile x-ray service in Mayo with the HSE stating: “The mobile X-ray service launched in Mayo in December 2023. Since then, we have seen a total of 785 patient visits and in 751 of these cases (96%), a hospital transfer was avoided, resulting in 1,502 ambulance trips saved. Performance metrics remained strong with an 88% on-time rate for X-rays and 99% of consultant radiologist reports returned to referrers within four hours.”
