A member of Mayo County Council  has been re-elected as Vice-Chair of the HSE West Regional Forum, which has been restructured and is now known as HSE West/North-West.

Castlebar-based Independent Cllr Michael Kilcoyne was re-elected unopposed to the role at the forum's annual general meeting in Merlin Park Hospital in Galway last Tuesday.

The new chair of the forum is Cllr Gerry McMonagle, a Sinn Féin representative on Donegal County Council, who replaces fellow Donegal man Cllr Ciaran Brogan. Vacating the chair, Cllr Brogan extended thanks to forum members, the HSE executive members and all the team involved for their cooperation over the past 12 busy months.

“All have the objective to improve the health service, outside of any politics, in order to meet the needs of each area and there has been a lot of successful work done over the past year," said the Fianna Fáil councillor.

He also thanked all those employed in the health service at all levels, saying there were many unsung heroes.

“Many go beyond the call of duty and it is important that we recognise the huge contribution everyone makes to try and improve patient care.”

Warm tributes were paid to the outgoing chair with Cllr Kilcoyne complimenting Cllr Brogan on his excellent work. Cllr Kilcoyne was proposed by Tuam-based Cllr Donagh Killilea who complimented him for his performance in the role of Vice-Chair over the past 12 months, adding that he had always stepped in to represent the chair when needed and that the Mayo councillor has always been a great voice on the forum.

Regional Executive Officer (REO) Tony Canavan joined in the tributes.

“This is a vibrant and active forum that is well connected to the community and the services we deliver and that is because of the members and the chairmanship and leadership shown from the top table.”
