Councillor 'taken aback' at timeline for major Ballina project

A major extension is planned for Ballina District Hospital.
The HSE has revealed that it will take years before the proposed Ballina District Hospital will be ready.
Assistant National Director of HSE Capital and Estates, Joe Hoare reported to the Regional West Health Forum in Galway last week that it is intended to commence the process for the procurement of a design team for the project in the coming months.
“It is hoped to have the design team procurement process completed in Q1 2025. It will then take a number of years to progress the scheme through the statutory approvals, design, tender, construction and equipping phases.”
Cllr Michael Loftus, who had requested an update on the project, said he welcomed the upcoming design team but added that he was "taken aback" to learn that it will take years to complete the scheme.
“There really seems to be a problem with us moving forward on projects and I wonder is the Children’s Hospital having an impact as a number have been waylaid. This 75-bed district hospital will make a huge difference to Mayo and I will continue to push for it over the coming years”, he said.
Regional Executive Officer Tony Canavan said the Children's Hospital in Dublin was not impacting the Ballina project.
