Emotions run high over Mayo town centre parking
Tensions are flaring over parking at a town centre location.
Concerns were aired over parking issues at a Castlebar town centre location,
Cllr Blackie Gavin told the recent meeting of Castlebar Municipal District that Newtown residents are unhappy with the situation at a shared car park. The small car park adjoins Newtown and Brooklands with long-standing arrangements supposed to be in place for residents.
Cllr Gavin said parking spaces that are meant to be reserved for residents are being taken up by other motorists.
Cllr Donna Sheridan, who is a local resident, said there is a ‘major issue’. She said an Airbnb in the area has been taking up spaces and alleged that she has been the subject of intimidation over parking at the site.
Cllr Sheridan said her car was reported to Gardaí for parking at the location by someone who was not from Newtown.
Cllr Sheridan called for metered parking to be put in place at the car park with permits provided to residents. She said she believed this is the only solution.
“People want this issue dealt with once and for all," said the Fine Gael councillor. "Some people are being treated very badly in this situation,” she added.
