Council approves sale of sites in Mayo

The matters came before the recent meeting of Mayo County Council.

A proposal to dispose of lands at Tawnaghmore Upper and Mullafarry in Killala to Mayo Data Hub Limited has been approved by Mayo County Council.

The land in question, which the council acquired from Fand Limited of Arthur Cox Building, Earlsfort Terrace, Dublin 2, consists of two plots, the first measuring 36 acres, which was to be sold for €803,000, and and the second, measuring 23 acres, which had a price tag of €520,000.

Council officials had noted that the sale is subject to conditions attached to a resolution passed at a meeting of the local authority on January 10th, 2022, that an annual financial contribution be made to the local community once the business of the data centre became operational. It was also noted that this sale  was subject to planning permission and sufficient power interconnection from EirGrid or ESB networks. The council is to retain a right to re-purchase either or both plots where development had not started within five years.

However, a plan to sell a site at Crossmolina Business Park was rejected. Councillors were told that two acres of land had been acquired at the park from Liam Cawley and it was proposed to sell them to M. Carey Properties Ltd, which is based in St Albans, Hertfordshire, England. The sale price was €180,000, subject to contract.

Cllr Michael Loftus told members that the planned sale had already been rejected by councillors in Ballina Municipal District. It was agreed not to go ahead with the sale.

A second smaller site in Crossmolina, near to the local fire station, was sold to the Electricity Supply Board. The land was originally purchased from the Industrial Development Authority and the consideration is for a nominal fee of one euro only, with the sale subject to contract. The site measures about one-hundredth of an acre.

In Westport, it was agreed to approve a 20-year lease of Croagh Patrick Visitor Centre at Murrisk to Mayo North-East LEADER at an annual rent of €1,000, subject to periodic reviews, and with an opt-out clause after five years. The purchaser proposes to run it as a cafe and virtual reality experience.
