Calls for sewerage scheme extension in Ballina

A local councillor has called for Uisce Eireann (formerly Irish Water) to extend a sewerage system in the north Mayo area.

Cllr John O’Hara raised a notice of motion at last week’s Ballina Municipal District meeting calling for the sewerage system in the town to be extended out to the general Rehins/Ballynaraha area on the Foxford Road.

“This has been going on for years but nothing has happened. There’s a lot of houses there and an area with not a great sewerage system in it.”

He said he has received correspondence from residents looking to see what action can be taken.

“We don't ask for much in Ballina and we don't get much but the residents want to know what steps they can take for the sewerage system to come out to them."

"It should really be out there because there is also a large hotel with sometimes 300 or 400 people staying. You wouldn’t get that in any town,” he said.

It was agreed that contact would be made with Uisce Eireann with regards to this and Head of the MD Declan Turnbull said a letter would be sent following the meeting.
