Soon to be Ireland's first astronaut in space, Dr Norah Patten from Ballina, appeared on the Late Late Toy Show last Friday evening.

After demonstrating how to use a toy rocket, two aspiring astronauts, Zara from Tyrone and Cillian from Galway, received a surprise visit from their idol.

Dr Patten is set to go into orbit on an international spaceflight mission in 2026. After greeting the awe-struck children, Dr Patten gave them each a Christmas gift.

Zara was gifted seeds which spent time on the International Space Station in 2016. Zara enjoys conducting science experiments with her dad. Dr Patten suggested she conduct a science experiment on the well-traveled seeds.

Cillian received a patch that spent five weeks orbiting Earth in 2014. Cillian also has a deep love of space exploration; he shared with the audience a homemade replica of the Mars Rover cobbled together using a suitcase and tinfoil.
