Uisce Éireann 'lied' to people of Mayo town

Cllr Brendan Mulroy said the people of Newport (pictured) had been 'lied' to by Uisce Éireann.
A West Mayo councillor has accused Uisce Éireann of "lying" to the people of Newport by telling them the local sewerage treatment plant would be fixed at various dates over the last 10 years.
Cllr Brendan Mulroy told last week's Westport-Belmullet Municipal District meeting that he could recall numerous occasions over the years when the public utility offered assurances that sewage leeching directly into the sea would be treated as part of a new sewerage plant for the town.
“Uisce Éireann has lied again and again and that plant will not be even done by 2030, which they recently told us it would be.”
He claimed that investigations of purported treatment of the sewage by Uisce Éireann showed that what actually happened was that sewage was put into a holding tank for a while before being released into the bay.
“They should be up in the High Court for what they have done to people”, he said.
