'Scene of devastation' after bridge in Mayo was swept away
Mayo County Council crews are working diligently to get a handle on a ‘scene of devastation’ in Tourmakeady where a bridge was swept away during the events of Storm Bert.
The bridge at Derreendafderg, Srah was swept away with the wind and rain during last month's torrid weather event. Household access was not affected on either side of the bridge but council crews had to work extensively to make the road fully passable again.
Head of the Castlebar Municipal District David Mellett gave an update on the situation at last week’s area meeting.
“There was a scene of devastation in Tourmakeady. We have crews there since it happened and are trying to get a handle on it. The roads are now passable again,” he said.
Cllr Harry Barrett said there were also issues at the Glenisland Bridge near Beltra Lake and said the road in this location would have to be widened.
“There is nothing but a mud barrier stopping you from dropping into the lake, it is extremely dangerous,” he said.
