Sam Maguire story comes full circle in magic moment for 1951 final attendee

One man’s Mayo GAA story finally came full circle this week as he was reunited with the Sam Maguire Cup – 75 years after attending the 1951 All-Ireland Final.
Frank Courell attended the 1951 Final and watched on as Mayo defeated Meath 2-8 to 0-9. He, like many supporters would have to wait a long time before witnessing another such victory. Frank had also attended the 1948 final against Cavan where he was a mascot.
His father Gerald Courell was a trainer with that victorious Mayo team. This week, Frank was finally reunited with Sam Maguire when he was paid a visit by manager Andy Moran and players David McBrien and Kuba Callaghan.
Gerald’s grandson and Frank’s son Rory, a well-known and highly regarded local GAA referee, shared the story of this incredible reunion online.
