Local Notes: Success for Erris athletes at Community Games Finals
Congratulations to Oliver Reilly, Ben O’Connor, David Walsh, Shane Naughton and Michael Walsh on winning national gold medals in the U12 100m Relay at the Cairn Community Games recently.
Congratulations and well done to the three fantastic athletes who were among the team from Belmullet/Kilmore that took part in the Cairn Community Games recently.
Emily, Liam and Louie proudly represented both Belmullet/Kilmore Community Games and Mayo Community Games in U8 and U10 competitions, an incredible achievement.
Everyone is super proud of the three competitors and their coach Shane O'Connor for his hard work and dedication.
Eight local athletes competed in the finals, each achieving personal bests as they represented Belmullet/Kilmore Community Games and Mayo Community Games excellently. Congratulations to Mary Kate Reilly, Róisín Edwards and Padraic Edwards who competed brilliantly with Padraic narrowly missing out on a national medal.

The Mayo Irish Diaspora Society will have their annual lunch in the Ellison Hotel in Castlebar on Saturday, September 12th, with a number of presentations on the evening.
One of these presentations will be to the Warwickshire GAA Youth Academy in memory of Dr John McAndrew, from Bangor Erris, who was one of the longest surviving Mayo Gaelic footballers to hold All-Ireland Senior Football Championship winners' medals. He was part of the 1950 and 1951 team, captained by Seán Flanagan that won titles back-to-back those years.
The Mayo Irish Diaspora Society celebrates global connections to County Mayo by honouring prominent figures and community contributors. The society hosts annual events celebrating figures from the global diaspora, such as past awards recognising international leaders, community builders, and local heritage advocates.
Sunset4Stop 5km Fundraising Walk takes place on Saturday, September 12, starting at 6.30pm from the IWA Centre, Logmore. Registration is €20 and U16s go free.
This is a family-friendly community event supporting a local suicide prevention service. In 2025, NWSTOP delivered 737 sessions of free counselling in Erris.
Please walk together as a community, support this important cause, stand in solidarity with those who are struggling and remember all who are no longer here with us. Ballycroy Sheep Show Committee are holding their show on next Sunday, September 6th, in Ballycroy Village, starting at 1pm sharp. All are welcome.
Erris Family and Community Support Centre will be setting up Rainbows peer support groups this autumn/winter.
The groups are for children and young people seven years and up who have experienced loss or separation. Groups are free, confidential, and provide a safe and compassionate space to help cope with difficult feelings and connect with others who have had similar experiences.
Expressions of interest are now open. Groups will be formed based on demand. Registering your interest places you under no obligation.

There was no winner of the jackpot of €10,900 in the Kilcommon Community Development Lotto on August 23rd when the numbers drawn were 1, 3, 8 and 10.
The house prize winner of €100 was Tony McGuire, Carramore and the two €30 offline winners were Frank McLaughlin, Castlebar and John O’Donoghue, Gortleatilla. The two €30 online winners were Nicola Loftus, Rossport and Lorcan Mason, Pullathomas.
The latest jackpot was €11,000 and the draw took place in the Lighthouse Tavern.
A great day in Inishturk Island Regatta recently and congratulations to Donal Murphy who won the senior men’s six-oar with John F (Inishturk) and Conor McDonagh.
Denny Murphy and Riley McGoldrick (Blacksod) won the Juniors with John (Inishbofin), while Patrick Doocey and Aaron Lally (Blacksod) were third with Conor. Kathleen and Conor won mixed and Una and Jackie McCafferty (Blacksod) teamed up with Keira Keogh to win ladies while Kathleen, Melissa McCafferty (Blacksod) and Emily (Inishturk) were second. Sean and Micheál Meenaghan and Thomas McGinty were second and third in mixed and second in men’s - a great day’s currach racing and craic for the two Erris clubs and a great event.
The club was delighted to welcome clubs from all over Ireland to the beautiful Doohoma Beach over the recent weekend as Tullaghan Bay Rowing Club hosted the first-ever Coastal Regatta in Connacht. It was a great day on the shore while the juniors and seniors took to the water and raced against some of the best athletes in the country.
Some of the athletes competing will be representing Ireland over the coming weeks at international competitions in Spain, Portugal and Scotland.
Events simply couldn’t happen without incredible support, and the club is so grateful to its five amazing sponsors for supporting Tullaghan Bay Rowing Club’s first Connacht rowing event on Doohoma Beach.

The school community of St Brendan’s College wishes to congratulate Leaving Certificate student Hugh Ruane, who has been named the recipient of the Anne Staunton Award for Academic Excellence for 2026.
This prestigious recognition follows Hugh’s outstanding achievement of 570 points in the Leaving Certificate examinations, a truly exceptional result, including H1 grades in HL Maths, Biology and Engineering.
The school also congratulates Hugh’s classmates who achieved results in excess of 500 points, significantly surpassing the national average and continuing the proud tradition of academic excellence among the students of St Brendan’s College.

The Michelle Gaughan Memorial Darts event takes place on Sunday, September 13, in the Broadhaven Bay Hotel.
This year sees all events on the day played out in round robin style, then knockouts including the newly added ladies event. This ensures everyone will get plenty of games all day long to shake off those summer cobwebs.
All events are confined to Erris players only and start times are sharp, no late entries please.
The youths event is open to players aged 18 or under on the day with registration from midday and games starting at 12.30pm - €5 entry.
Ladies registration opens for 1.30pm with games starting at 2pm - entry is €10.
Main event registration opens from 3pm with games under way from 4pm sharp - €10 entry.
With 10 boards in operation, a brilliant day's darts is most certainly guaranteed.
Raffle on the day in aid of Glencastle N.S. All donations and spot prizes welcome.
There was no winner of this week’s Kiltane GAA Club lotto jackpot of €6,200 with the two €50 winners being Tom Taffe, Rathowen and Rebecca Carey, Cloontakilla while John and Mary Gillespie, Bellacorick and Jack Barrett, Roy both won €25. The two online winners were Angeline Turver, Roy East (€50) and Bridie McGrath, Rossport (€25).
