Sale of former Mayo pub announced

The Olde Woods in Balla

It has been announced that a former pub that was being used for emergency accommodation has been sold.

The Dempsey family, the owners of the Olde Woods in Ballina have posted a statement on social media following the sale.

There had been concern about the suitability of the pub for emergency accommodation following the lease of the premises to an independent company. The issue was raised by local councillor Donna Hyland.

“We wish to announce the sale of The Olde Woods premises and would like to clarify a number of misconceptions that have circulated in recent months,” read the social media post.

It is understood that the building will redeveloped as apartments by the new owners.

“Firstly, the premises has been leased for the last three years by an independent company who have been responsible for all dealings within The Olde Woods. Secondly, a sale has now been agreed with a separate party and it is our understanding that the intention of the purchaser is for the property to be redeveloped into apartments which will be a huge asset to the village. Thirdly, notice has now been issued to the leasee and we hope matters will be concluded in the coming weeks,” the family added.

“We are immensely proud of everything The Olde Woods has represented within the community over the years. Our family has always believed strongly in supporting and contributing to village life in every way possible. We have been heavily involved in the local community for generations and will continue to support and play our part in the future, just as we always have.

“We would like to sincerely thank everyone for their support, loyalty, and kindness over the years. The friendships, memories, and sense of community created through The Olde Woods will always hold a special place in our hearts,” post concluded.
