Safety concerns about South Mayo crossroads

A South Mayo county councillor has reiterated his safety fears over The Neale crossroads.

Cllr Damien Ryan said that in a week that saw top-down changes to speed limits in Mayo, he was seeking confirmation that Mayo Co Council had applied for funding to the Department of Transport for improvement works at The Neale crossroads for 2025.

In a written reply, the Head of Roads Paul Dolan said a preliminary appraisal was submitted to the Department in relation to the crossroads. However, the scheme was not included in this year’s funding request as the Roads Design Office is progressing other projects and does not have the resources to progress further schemes currently.

Cllr Ryan said he was not "one bit happy" with this response and urged the council to send an updated application to the Department as soon as possible and to install enhanced safety measures for now.

The Fianna Fáil councillor said he has raised this in the past two years and is disappointed with the lack of progress thus far.
