Profound sadness following death of former Mayo footballer

Ger Brady RIP.

There is sadness throughout the county and beyond today with news of the passing of a former Mayo footballer.

Ger Brady, Grattan Park, Claremorris and formerly of Murneen South, Barnacarroll, Co Mayo died peacefully yesterday at The Mayo Hospice after a brave battle with Motor Neurone Disease.

Ger played for Claremorris at underage and senior level, and also represented Mayo at minor, U21 and senior level.

He played in the Connacht Senior Football Championship meeting between Mayo and New York in May 1999.

Last June, friends and former teammates of Ger played in a 'Together for Ger' charity match in Claremorris.

St Colman's College, Claremorris, paid tribute to their former pupil.

"We are deeply saddened in St. Colman’s College today to hear the sad news of the passing of Ger Brady, following a brave battle with illness. Ger was one of the finest footballers to ever wear the red and white of St. Colman’s and was instrumental in our All Ireland Colleges B win in 1996. We offer our heartfelt sympathies to his wife Karen, his son Dylan, all his family and his many, many friends. May Ger Rest in Peace. Ar dheis Dé go raibh sé."

Ger will be sadly missed by his loving wife Karen (Bell) and their precious son Dylan, his Parents Gerry and Margaret, mother-in-law Ann, sisters Elaine Forde, Tara Nally and Louise Grant, brothers-in-law Richard, Colin, Keith, Tomas and Keith, sisters-in-law Aisling, Aimee and Edel, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, relatives and many friends.

Ger’s remains will repose at Gilligan’s Funeral Home, Market Square, Claremorris from 5pm on Saturday until 7pm. Remains will arrive to St Colman’s Church, Claremorris for Funeral Mass on Sunday at 2pm with burial afterwards in St Colman’s Cemetery, Claremorris.
