Kavanagh’s SuperValu Westport has officially reopened its newly extended and revamped, state-of-the-art store following a €4 million investment.
The upgraded store delivers an enhanced shopping experience for customers and reflects the Kavanagh family's continued investment in delivering a modern, high-quality retail experience for the Westport community.
With a renewed focus on fresh food and range, the redeveloped store now includes an additional aisle, increased refrigeration, a dedicated sushi bar and an enlarged off-licence. The refurbishment has increased the store’s floor space by 20%, enabling a significantly broader product range, including enhanced bakery and cake offerings, an expanded world foods offering, and a new ready meals range located in the centre of the fresh aisle to facilitate easy meal solutions. The upgrade also features a larger coffee shop, a post office, and additional car parking spaces.
The Westport store moved from the Octagon to its current location on Shop Street in November 1984. Today, the store employs over 120 people and takes great pride in its support of local producers including Glasraí Organic Farm, Sinéad’s Gardens, Cabots of Westport, Kelly’s of Newport, and Jack and Eddie’s Sausages and the Breadski Brothers, among others.
Sustainability remains a key focus for the store, with continued investment in energy-efficient refrigeration and LED lighting helping to further reduce energy consumption. As part of the redevelopment works, the store’s emissions will also be reduced by 20%, aligning with SuperValu’s wider commitment to environmentally responsible retailing.
Commenting on the launch, Noel Kavanagh Jnr, Managing Director of the Kavanagh Group, said: “We are delighted to unveil our newly expanded and redeveloped store following significant investment and the hard work of our team. The state-of-the-art store will deliver premium quality and fantastic value to our customers, with increased floor space allowing for an additional aisle, enhanced shopping experience, and offerings including our new-look Bakery, Sushi Bar and Cheese Counter, alongside a strong range of local products from local suppliers.
“As a family business, we take great pride in serving the Westport community. It is our ambition that the additional Supermarket space and range, along with the post office, enhanced O’Cece’s coffee shop, existing hardware store and additional parking will further the store's position as a community hub in the centre of Westport. We are extremely grateful to our loyal customers for their continued support and look forward to welcoming them back in store.”
The store also actively supports local clubs and community causes, with Store Manager Liam Campion playing a long-standing and formative role in Westport’s SuperValu TidyTowns committee, driving local engagement over many years. The store also supports a wide range of local organisations, including Westport United, the local GAA clubs, athletics and rugby clubs, among many others
