Council set to rule on major Mayo town centre housing project
An ambitious regeneration project is planned for the town.
Mayo County Council will soon announce its decision on a major housing and regeneration project in Belmullet.
KDP Properties plan to demolish existing vacant and derelict properties (formally known as Erris Tavern and Murphys Florists) on the town’s Main Street and outbuildings at the rear yard.
In their place, the developer hopes Construct 12 town houses. These will consist of a pair of one-bed room properties, nine two-bedroom homes and one three-bedroom unit.
Erris Chamber of Commerce made a submission on the project.
The head of the Chamber, Brian Bakeberg said the organisation supports the ongoing regeneration and reuse of vacant and underutilised sites within Belmullet.
“The redevelopment of the site is acknowledged as a positive step in principle. However, given its location within the commercial core of Belmullet, it is important that any development supports and maintains the role of Main Street as the primary focus for commercial activity,” the Chamber stated.
“It is considered that the proposed development should demonstrate alignment with the intended role and function of this part of Main Street, particularly in terms of contributing to an active and engaging town centre environment,” the Chamber added.
The Chamber said parking and accessibility must be a key consideration and proposed development should be considered in terms of its alignment with the established and future commercial function of Main Street.
Mayo County Council is set to make a decision on the project on Tuesday, October 6.
