ALERT: Popular bathing location hit with urgent 'Do Not Swim' warning
An urgent Do Not Swim warning has been issued for Enniscrone Pier as doing so may cause illness.
Bathers are advised by Sligo County Council not to swim at this location due to the risk of deterioration in water quality.
The likely cause of the issue is high levels of rainfall resulting in increased level of bacteria in the water but this is expected to be a short-term issue.
Beach users have been told they should take precautions to reduce the risk of illness.
This includes avoiding swallowing or splashing water, washing your hands before handling food, avoiding swimming with an open cut or wound or if you are pregnant or have a weakened immune system.
It has been advised that higher levels of bacteria are usually short-lived and most bathers are unlikely to experience any illness.
The HSE have been advised and follow up monitoring has been arranged. The Notice will remain in place until water quality returns to an acceptable standard.
