Memorial to Dr Mick Loftus to be unveiled later this month

A bust of the late Dr Mickey Loftus is to be unveiled by the president of the GAA in Crossmolina later this month,
Dr Loftus, who was a substitute on the All-Ireland winning team of 1951 and later president of the GAA in the 1980s, died in April 2023 aged 93. His passing was met with widespread tributes from across the GAA world, as well as in the medical community where he was highly respected.
In addition to his football achievements for Mayo, Dr Loftus won three Sigerson Cups, became an inter-county referee taking charge of two All-Ireland Finals in 1965 and 1968 and served as chairman of the Connacht Council.
His memorial will be unveiled by GAA President Jarlath Burns.
At last week’s meeting of the Ballina Municipal District, councillors noted correspondence from the Crossmolina Community Council regarding its plans to erect the memorial to Dr Loftus and welcomed the proposal.
“It would be very appropriate to honour Dr Loftus and we’re all excited for this event,” said Cllr Annie May Reape.
Dr Loftus’ son Cllr Michael Loftus said he welcomed these plans, adding that it will be a great honour as Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council to be part of the unveiling ceremony later this month.
The unveiling of the memorial takes place on Saturday, May 25, at 10am at the Crossmolina Civic Centre.
