Mayo town business takes on a new look after recent retirement

The Abbey Street supermarket will continue to serve the local community under new management.

Pado and Nora Cunningham have retired from their business, Cunningham's Londis Plus.

On November 27, the Londis on Abbey Street in Ballyhaunis was bustling with staff and patrons. They flooded the shop to wish Pado and Nora the best in their retirement.

The bittersweet celebration was full of humorous anecdotes and fond memories. Everyone was in agreement that Cunningham's Londis welcomed all with a genuine warmth that will be difficult to replicate.

Pado took over the business from his mother, Mary, over 50 years ago. He is the third generation of the family to operate the famous Ballyhaunis grocery store.

Pado is credited with transforming the relatively small grocery store into a thriving supermarket centre. It was only in recent decades that the supermarket joined the Londis franchise.

Margaret Hannan (née Murray) and Cathy Kedian (née Mannion), two of the shop's long-time employees, also retired from Cunningham's after years of dedicated service.

On the bright side, the Abbey Street supermarket will continue to serve the local community under new management. Henceforth, it will trade under the Centra brand.
