Mayo school wins national academic prize

Students from St Joseph’s Community College, Charlestown with David Friel, left, at PExpo in Dublin last Thursday.

A Mayo school took a top category prize at the Sidea 12th annual PExpo held at the National Indoor Arena in Dublin on Thursday.

Fifth year and transition years students from St Joseph’s Community College in Charlestown had submitted twelve projects to the show and were rewarded with a special category prize as the Best New School – an award they can never win again!

PExpo, developed in association with the Physical Education Association of Ireland, has the aim of promoting a better understanding of PE, sport, fitness and health among second level school students.

A record number of 310 projects had entered the competition this year, with schools travelling from all four provinces to show off their knowledge of the science behind various sports, as well as health and fitness.

The overall winner of the competition was Sofiia Shevchuk from St Mary’s College, Arklow. Shevchuk’s project, called ‘JCSL Smart Athletic Wristband’, explored the possibilities for a smart emergency wristband and app that tracks vital signs, detects health problems early and can alert family members and emergency services if the wearer falls ill.
