Man charged following major Mayo drugs seizure

A man in his 40s, arrested in connection with the cannabis seizure as part of Operation Tara in Castlebar, has been charged.
He is scheduled to appear before Castlebar District Court later this afternoon, 20th May 2026.
As part of Operation Tara, Gardaí have seized €360,000 of suspected illegal drugs, and arrested a man following a search of a vehicle in the Castlebar, Co. Mayo area on Monday 18th May 2026.
Gardaí from the Mayo Roscommon Longford Divisional Drugs Unit, while on patrol, stopped and searched a car on the evening of Monday 18th May 2026.
During the course of the search, 18 kg of suspected illegal cannabis with an approximate value of €360,000 was seized.
A man (aged in his 40’s) was arrested in connection with the incident, and is currently detained pursuant to Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996, at a Garda Station in the North Western Region.
The drugs seized are subject to further analysis.
Investigations are ongoing.
