Investigation ongoing as ambulance explodes in Mayo town

Loud explosions awoke residents in Castlebar in the early hours of Saturday morning after an ambulance caught fire at the ambulance base at the Sacred Heart Home.

It is understood that the ambulance caught fire due to a technical issue, with the explosion coming due to an oxygen cylinder being on board.

A number of cars in the vicinity of the ambulance have been damaged but no injuries have been reported.

A technical investigation is ongoing underway, with part of the ambulance base sealed off, and gardai are not treating the fire as suspicious.

Sacred Heart Hospital remains full operational today.
