Mayo playground to get a roof
Lough Lannagh playground, Castlebar
Minister of State Alan Dillon TD has welcomed news that tenders are now being sought for the design and construction of a canopy covering at the popular Lough Lannagh Playground in Castlebar.
The project, procured under an open tender process, will deliver a waterproof covering to enhance the playground facilities, ensuring children and families can enjoy the space year-round, regardless of weather conditions. The works are expected to be completed within three months and will cost €35,000.
Minister Dillon said, “This investment is a practical and welcome addition to one of Castlebar’s most loved community amenities. The canopy will provide shelter, cover and protection, making the playground more accessible and enjoyable for families throughout the year.” Lough Lannagh has become a hub for recreation and community life in Castlebar, and this project reflects our commitment to improving local facilities and supporting family-friendly spaces. It is a small but significant step that will benefit many residents and visitors alike.
The project forms part of Mayo County Council’s ongoing programme to improve community infrastructure and deliver social facilities that promote inclusion, wellbeing, and cohesion.
The plans for a climbing wall, skate park, and the multi-million euro major sporting campus will further ensure Lough Lannagh becomes a centre of excellence for recreation and sport. These investments will not only benefit families and young people locally but will also attract visitors and events, boosting Castlebar’s profile and supporting the wider Mayo economy.
Minister Dillon concluded, “Investments like this demonstrate how targeted funding can make a real difference in everyday life. I look forward to seeing the canopy completed and to families enjoying the improved facilities at Lough Lannagh. I will continue to work closely with my local colleague, Cllr Ger Deere, Cllr Sheridan, and Cllr Cyril Burke to ensure this project progresses smoothly and delivers for the community.
