Heartfelt tributes to treasured shopkeeper

A community is mourning following the loss of a much-loved shopkeeper and local figure.
Maureen Mulligan, of Sligo Road, and The Square, Ballaghaderreen, was a highly regarded member of the community in the town.
Alongside her husband Michael, a retired councillor, Maureen ran P Mulligan’s hardware store on The Square in Ballaghaderreen.
The business has been a fixture in the town for over a century, and Maureen was loved by customers.
Local councillor Michael Frain said Ballaghaderreen has lost an ‘absolute lady.’
“Maureen worked in the shop for as long as I can remember. A lovely woman who came originally from Loughlynn. Maureen was a lovely woman and really contributed to the community of Ballaghaderreen both in the shop and in every aspect of life. She was lady to her fingertips,” said Cllr Frain.
There were scores of online tributes to Maureen.
“Maureen was a wonderful person and a true lady,” read a message of condolence.
“Maureen was such a lovely lady. Always had a nice word for everyone and a lovely smile,” said another tribute.
“She was the nicest, kindest and most humble person you could ever meet and she almost felt bad taking your money . I feel sorry for anyone that hadn’t the pleasure of meeting her,” a mourner commented.
Maureen will be greatly missed and remembered with love by her heartbroken family, her husband Michael, children Ciaran, Graniá, Claire and Michael, grandchildren Fiona, Ronan, Carah, Éabha, Ollie, Bobby and Jack, sisters Catherine and Assunta, brother John-Joe, son-in-law Benny, daughters-in-law Maura and Lisa, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, extended family, neighbours, customers and many friends.
Maureen will repose in The Sharkey Funeral Home, Ballaghaderreen on Friday from 5pm until 7.30pm. Removal from the funeral home on Saturday at 1.30pm to St Nathy’s Cathedral, Ballaghaderreen arriving for Mass of the Resurrection at 2pm, followed by interment in Kilcolman Cemetery.
