There were 294 patients on trolleys at Mayo University Hospital in August, which was the second worst August for overcrowding at the facility ever recorded.

The four hospitals in the west had more than 2,200 patients awaiting treatment.

MUH had a 27% reduction of patients on trolleys as the tally fell from 404 people in August 2022.

Meanwhile, Sligo University Hospital recording its highest ever number since records began in August of 737.

University Hospital Galway had 920 patients languishing on chairs and trolleys, the third worst performing facility nationwide.

The Trolley Watch figures were compiled by the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation.

Overcrowding also continues to be a major problem at Portiuncula University Hospital with 304 patients on trolleys at the facility in August, the worst overcrowding since records began in 2006.

Fianna Fáil Councillor Blackie Gavin councillor, a member of the HSE West Forum, said the trolley figures for MUH are like a 'bad record repeating itself'.

"They promised the extension to the A&E in 2014 but nothing has happened, where are all the extra beds that were promised?."

Cllr Gavin said the HSE release press release after press release, and he said it is very frustrating and 'like banging your head against the wall'.

"It's not fair on frontline staff that are there in Mayo University Hospital," he said. "We have stood outside the hospital protesting and it's an ongoing thing."

Nationally, there was 9,720 patients admitted to hospital without a bed in August, according to the figures, which were first compiled in 2006.

There were 1,888 patients on trolleys at University Hospital Limerick and 984 at Cork University Hospital, marginally ahead of University Hospital Galway.

Across the four hospitals in the west there were 2,255 patients on trolleys in August.

The number of children on trolleys is escalating at a worrying rate with over 167 children admitted to hospital without a bed throughout the month of August.

INMO General Secretary Phil Ní Sheaghdha stressed there is no doubt this winter is going to continue the ‘pattern of difficult and dangerous times in our hospitals’.
