GAA legend John O’Mahony passes away
The late John O'Mahony.
All-Ireland winning GAA manager and former Fine Gael TD John O’Mahony has passed away at the age of 71.
A former Mayo football manager, the Kilmovee native led Galway to two All-Ireland football titles and guided Leitrim to a Connacht crown. He brought Mayo to an All-Ireland final in 1989 and had two spells in charge of the county. He won back-to back provincial crowns with Mayo in 1988 and 1989 and captured another Connacht title with Mayo in 2009. His career saw him capture more Connacht SFC titles than any other manager.
O’Mahony also had a bright political career elected as a Fine Gael TD in 2007. He lost his seat in the 2016 General Election having been forced to stand in Galway West when the Mayo constituency was reduced to four seats. In 2016, he was appointed a Senator.
The news of Mr O’Mahony’s sad passing comes less than a week after the death of his great friend Tommie Gorman.
