Moy Valley Resources had another productive year
North Mayo Tourism created additional awareness about Ballina and the surrounding hinterland.
Moy Valley Resources was established in 1991 to develop the resources of North Mayo and West Sligo. In its recent annual report relating to 2025, the company demonstrates progress towards achieving its mission for the benefit of the people and businesses of the region.
The objectives of Moy Valley Resources are mainly, but not exclusively, delivered through the work of its five core programmes – LEADER, Community Employment, Mayo North Tourism, Mayo Volunteer Centre and its sister project Craoibhín Ballina, as well as through enterprise and community development projects.
The EU LEADER 2023-2027 programme opened in Mayo in June 2025. It makes a fund of €6.6 million available for rural development and empowering localities. In collaboration with Mayo North East Partnership Company, Moy Valley Resources assists candidates in applying for funding for projects under the themes of economic development, rural infrastructure, and sustainable development of the rural environment.
Among the numerous activities of Moy Valley Resources, one may mention in particular the IQ Ballina enterprise space. This €8 million state-of-the-art complex opened in 2024. It allows businesses to locate and individuals to work remotely in central Ballina and is a key contribution to the business environment in North Mayo. The tenant occupancy rates increased considerably in 2025.
In another significant success, the Moy Valley Resources Community Employment scheme saw a 70% progression rate last year, which means that these participants accessed employment, training, education or other opportunities. It provides long-term unemployed or otherwise disadvantaged persons the opportunity to receive experience, training and mentoring and thereby assists them in their pathway towards employment.
Meanwhile, Mayo North Tourism demonstrated higher than ever reach as it communicated about the area as a year-round tourist destination through its website and social media channels. It has become an important driver of the local economy.
“Its digital platforms grew significantly. Its website www.northmayo.ie recorded 206,890 page views from 105,592 active users. Its social media channels Facebook, Instagram, X and LinkedIn delivered millions of views and high engagement. They also resulted in strong traffic to member businesses,” stated David Dwane in his chairperson’s report.
Moreover, Craoibhín Ballina has continued to develop and diversify its offering of cultural, well-being and handcraft activities in support of social inclusion, particularly for those aged over-55. It hosted the Living Well Programme in partnership with the HSE in 2025. This self-management course is designed for adults living with long-term health conditions.
Mayo Volunteer Centre also expanded its influence. In particular, one project centred around exploring youth engagement and volunteering in Mayo. It allowed a toolkit to be developed for the centre. In addition, a videographer produced a series of videos aimed at providing public information and greater awareness to enable people to volunteer from marginalised communities, ethnic minorities or with disabilities. These projects were designed to offer the opportunity to participate while also creating connection through shared activities and experiences.
