Gregori Petrov of Ballinafad House had to be restrained and handcuffed after threatening other staff and refugees.

A Ukrainian man was drunk when he threatened residents and staff in a refugee centre.

Gregori Petrov, aged 37, of Ballinafad House, Belcarra, pleaded guilty to the public order offence before a sitting of Castlebar District Court.

On July 29 last, Gardai were called to the refugee centre at Ballinafad House. Petrov was highly intoxicated and threatening to staff and other refugees.

He threatened Gardai and became aggressive and had to be restrained and handcuffed.

Petrov has no previous convictions and is an unemployed ship mechanic.

Solicitor Gary Mulchrone said his client hails from Odessa and arrived in Ireland before the outbreak of the war in his home country.

Mr Mulchrone said Petrov drank to excess and ‘let himself down badly’. The solicitor said his client’s behaviour was a ‘flash in the pan’. Petrov has apologised to staff in the centre and has helped out there since the incident.

Judge Vincent Deane handed down a €200 fine.
