Inquest into North Mayo fisherman's death is adjourned

Joachim McNulty

An inquest into the death of a 64-year-old fisherman who drowned when his vehicle entered the sea at Belderrig Pier on February 18 last has been opened and adjourned by Mayo coroner Dr Eleanor Fitzgerald.

Dr Fitzgerald opened the inquest at Ballina Courthouse and heard brief evidence in order that Joachim McNulty’s death can be registered.

A full hearing is not possible at this stage, the coroner explained, as a garda investigation into the incident is not yet completed.

Adjourning the substantive hearing to a later date Dr Fitzgerald said she didn’t anticipate the wait will be a lengthy one.

Briefly outlining the circumstances of Mr McNulty’s death, she explained that his car had gone into the sea from a slipway at Belderrig and become submerged in the water.

The medical cause of death was given to the brief hearing by pathologist Dr Tamas Nemeth as asphyxia due to drowning.
