Man damaged ex-partner's car

The case was heard at Ballina Courthouse.

A man damaged his ex-partner’s car when she did not answer the door.

John McDonagh, aged 34, of The Old Schoolhouse, Callow, Foxford, appeared before Ballina District Court where he pleaded guilty to criminal damage. He also offered guilty pleas to separate theft and public order offences.

On June 3, 2026, McDonagh went to his ex-partner’s home at Libadore, Ballina. He started banging on the door and shouting. When he was not allowed into the property he proceeded to damage the party’s injured car. He broke a wing mirror and put dents in the bonnet. The estimated cost of the damage was €450.

The defendant has 60 previous convictions. He told the court he is an alcoholic and that the offending was drink-related.

Judge Vincent Deane remanded McDonagh on bail and adjourned his case until October 27 for a probation report, telling him to engage with the Probation Service to “avoid a stretch". McDonagh was directed to stay away from the injured party and remain of good behaviour.
