Community building in Ballina is in need of urgent repair

The Estoria Cinema on Teeling Street in Ballina (now occupied by the Men's Shed group) could accommodate 750 patrons in its heyday in the 1950s.

A local councillor has called for urgent action to be taken to repair an important amenity in Ballina.

Ballina Men’s Shed provides a social and creative outlet for men in the local community. However, Cllr John O’Hara told last week’s meeting of the Ballina Municipal District that the building they use, the council-owned former Estoria Cinema on Teeling Street, currently has three holes in its roof.

Cllr O’Hara said the members of the Shed were capable of carrying out the work themselves but were unable to do so because of issues related to insurance. He urged Mayo Co Council to take action to prevent further issues.

“This is something the town needs. They have made a fine place out of almost nothing over there and we wouldn’t like to see it close down over something like this."

Head of the municipal district Declan Turnbull said the council will try to get the building fixed in the near future.
