Castlebar to become home to one of Ireland’s largest healthcare campuses

Practical completion is expected in November 2026, with commissioning to follow and services scheduled to begin in Q2 2027.

Castlebar is set to become home to one of the largest primary and community healthcare campuses in Ireland, Minister of State Alan Dillon TD has confirmed.

The major 3,900 square metre extension will complement the existing 4,000 square metre Primary Care Centre, almost doubling the size of the facility.

Practical completion is expected in November 2026, with commissioning to follow and services scheduled to begin in Q2 2027.

A further €3.2 million has been approved to fit out and equip the extension, including a new dedicated community MRI suite.

The development will expand paediatric and older-person care, chronic-disease management, cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation, speech and language therapy, community medicine, vaccination, audiology and home-support services.

Minister Dillon said, “This is a landmark healthcare development for Castlebar and Mayo.

"It will almost double the size of the existing centre and allow substantially more diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and follow-up care to be delivered closer to home.

“The new MRI suite and expanded community services will complement the vital work of Mayo University Hospital, reduce avoidable pressure on acute services and improve access to care for patients throughout Mayo.”

Minister Dillon acknowledged Seamus Beirne, General Manager of Primary Care Services for Mayo and Roscommon, and the Mayo Primary Care team for their work in progressing the development.

All property, lease, legal, governance and funding arrangements are complete.

Minister Dillon said he would continue engaging with the HSE on construction, commissioning and staffing to ensure the revised delivery timetable is met.
