Ballina council finds home for unspent money

The Ballina Civic Offices at Arran Place, Ballina

Councillors in the Ballina Municipal District have agreed to spend an unused portion of General Municipal Allocation (GMA) on improvement works at Ballina Athletics Track in Belleek.

An amount of €9,543 was left over from a portion of GMA allocated towards Maintenance and Town Twinning.

At the suggestion of municipal district head Declan Turnbull, it was agreed that this money would now be spent on painting the clubhouse at the athletic track, as well as the lines.

Welcoming the suggestion, Fine Gael Cllr John O’Hara said the track was a great facility for the town to have. The proposal was unanimously supported.

Mr Turnbull also told councillors that the local authority is currently seeking expressions of interest from a company or organisation to manage the athletics track for a one-year period.

A notice to this effect appeared in last week’s Western People and the council is welcoming interested applicants for the management role. Mr Turnbull said they will assess applicants in January to see who will manage the track in 2025.

Written submissions should be addressed to Declan Turnbull at the Civic Offices, Arran Place, Ballina or by email to dturnbull@mayococo.ie by 12 noon on Monday next, December 23, 2024.
