Ambitious plans for new Mayo athletics hub will commence shortly

The East Mayo Athletic Club and East Mayo Special Olympics groups have said that joint plans to develop new facilities for their combined membership of over 250 will commence this spring.
Planning permission was granted last July for an ambitious project to be located at Lowpark, Charlestown. The site is situated in the centre of Charlestown and will see an investment of €400,000 into the athletics hub project.
The East Mayo AC group, which was formed in 2019, has been working behind the scenes to bring its track development to life and its members' enthusiasm, energy and commitment will see the project to fruition this year.
This spring, work will commence on the six-lane floodlit 200-metre synthetic grass running track with a 3G astro in the centre, long jump area, throwing area and new cross-country training layout.
It is hoped that the hub will attract more participants, foster local talent and signal a turning point in athletics within the local community.
The committee has planned a number of events and initiatives to support the development of the facility. Patrons are invited to sponsor a metre of the track via the East Mayo AC club’s website and they are also offering sponsorship packages for businesses.
The club is also running a Lip Sync fundraiser, which will be officially launched in Walsh’s Bar in Charlestown at 9pm on next Friday, January 10, following the club’s annual general meeting at 7pm in the Arts Centre.
The club is also always on the lookout for more volunteers.
