The Hallinan family originally from Loginema, Culleens held a family reunion where cousins travelled from Dublin, Clare, Cork, England, Wales and USA to visit the original family home before celebrating in the Ocean Sands Hotel, Enniscrone. The death took place of Brendan Jacob. Knockanillaun, Ballina, and formerly of Quigabar, Kilglass, on August 6, peacefully, in the exceptional care of the doctors, nurses and staff of the ICU at Mayo University Hospital, Castlebar, surrounded by his loving family. Brendan was predeceased by his parents Mixie and Rita. He was the beloved husband of Evelyn and devoted father of Yvonne and Triona. He will be sadly missed by his wife, daughters, his siblings Michael (Parke), Marie Breslin (Claremorris), Noel (Enniscrone), Ann Culkin (Kilglass), and Carol Tracy (New York), uncle Fonso Carroll (Quigabar), aunt Anna Tolan (Crossmolina), brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.
Brendan reposed at his residence in Knockanillaun, Ballina on Friday, August 8, from 2 to 7pm and his funeral arrived to the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption, Ardagh on Sunday morning, Augusut 10, for 11am Requiem Mass, followed by funeral to McGowan’s Crematorium, Collooney, Co Sligo, via Quigabar, where Enniscrone Kilglass GAA Club formed a guard of honour as a mark of respect.
The Enniscrone Kilglass GAA Club extend its sympathies to the entire Jacob family as they have had a long association with the club over the years and Brendan won a minor championship medal alongside his brother Mixie in 1975. As a mark of respect to the Jacob family, the pitch at Quigabar was closed from Friday until Sunday.

Work on the exterior roof of the front porch of Enniscrone church (including insulating the exterior roof improving water drainage and covering roof with new asphalt cost €38,635.40. Work on the interior of the front porch including replacing the water-damaged ceiling and plastering same, putting down a new carpet, replacing radiators, painting the room, purchasing new chairs cost €10,575.75, making the total expenditure €49,211.15.
Coleman Electronics sponsored the electrical fittings and the rewiring of the front porch of the church. Thanks has been extended to Mattie Coleman and Coleman Electronics for this very generous gesture which reduced the expenditure on the works completed.
The total contributions to the second collection at Mass to cover the expenditure to date has come to €47,963.24, which is a shortfall of €1258.91 on the money spent.
Fr Gerry is very grateful to all who have contributed and continue to do so as there are other areas of the church that require attention including an area in the choir gallery and church tower where water damage has occurred.
A strong performance from Western Gaels in the first half against a strong wind gave them the platform to increase their lead in the second half. Skill and determination was on show, which led to captain Brian Beglane lift the county title. The final score was Western Gaels 9-09, Easkey 1-06. Well done to all the players, coaches Derek O’Boyle and Dermot Beglane and to all the parents.
The U14A championship group phase concluded last week on a winning high as the girls overcame Calry/St Joseph’s. The girls finish 2nd on the table in the group stages and now look forward to the semi-final stages where they take on Curry. St John’s have topped the group so therefore await the winners of the semi-final in the U14A championship final.
The minor ladies took on CT Gaels where they came out the wrong side. The girls have been missing a number of players for various reasons so will hope to get a win under their belt in the next round. Speedy recovery was extended to their minor player Keeva Flynn who picked up a nasty injury in a recent soccer game with Sligo Rovers. The club hope to see her back fit and flying in no time.
The senior ladies made a smashing start to the senior championship beating St Nathys on their home turf on Sunday morning, August 10. They had a bye this week and will be facing St Mary’s next week in round 2.
The numbers drawn in the Enniscrone combined football clubs blotto draw which was held on Sunday, August 10, were 24, 33 and 34. There was no jackpot winner. The €25 prizewinners were Kieran Conway, Colin Gilroy, Patricia Donegan and Eoghan and Aoife McGuinness. The jackpot in the latest draw which was held on Sunday, August 17, in Hopkins Bar, was €6400.
Walking soccer takes place every Wednesday from 7.30 to 8.30pm at Michael McGowan Park, Enniscrone. This non-contact game and is open to men and women and is suitable for people aged 18+. No experience is necessary.
The August social dancing dates in the Old Church, Enniscrone are as follows; dance classes with Frank from 8-9pm and the social dancing from 9-11pm, where they will be waltzes, jives, foxtrots, quickstep and more. It is a fun way to get your rhythm back on track and all levers are welcome. No partners are required. The entry is only €10 with refreshments and door prizes on the night. Pat and Lady T will take to the stage on Friday, August 22 and Sean Corrigan on Friday, August 29. Come along and bring your friends as the more the merrier.

A celebration of the built and natural heritage of Kilglass House, Walled Garden and Woodland will take place on Saturday, August 23, from 1-3pm with two workshops. One is on built heritage/history of Kilglass House and the other on biodiversity in walled garden and woodland. Bring a picnic and refreshments to enjoy in the beautiful walled garden and woodland. They will have fresh fruit and vegetables available on the day to be picked.

Cian Corcoran and Calvin Foody, Castleconnor Handball Club made history in Collooney Handball Club last week when they contested the U13A singles Connaught championship final, it was an open draw. In the first game Cian raced into an early lead 7-2, Calvin got going and levelled the game 8-8. Cian got a good serve going and was leading 14-8 when Calvin started pulling out all the stops and levelled the game 14 each. Calvin served for the first game but could not get that mark, Cian got into serve and won the game point.
In the second game, Calvin played the best handball and got a good lead 8-3, he extended the lead to 13-8, and finished off the second game 15-8.
Another tie-breaker for the lads. Cian got the early start with some precise serving around the walls and into the corners, leading 7-2. Calvin had a few chances to gain points but Cian just seeded to have the killer shot to get the point. Cian progressed into a strong 13-6 and won the game and the match 15-7.
Castleconnor Handball Club congratulate both boys for a fantastic display of handball skills. The day belonged to Cian on winning the U13A Singles Connaught Championship and hard luck to Calvin.
Foroige, Ireland’s leading youth organisation is looking for passionate and positive adults to help run local volunteer-led youth clubs.
Castleconnor Foroige Club is a community based club for young people supported by adult volunteers. They offer a fun and inclusive environment where young people can gather safely, voice opinions, demonstrate leadership and engage in their communities and take part in a wide range of fun activities.
