Senior league fixture

Charlestown Sarsfields travel to Mayo Abbey to take on Mayo Gaels in the final round of division 2 A of the county senior league on Saturday, July 4, with the throw-in provisionally fixed for 7pm. This is a vital fixture for the green and white and one they could do with winning as they hover close to the foot of the table with relegation staring them in the face. It’s a tight division however with a number of teams on the same number of points as the Sarsfields with many different permutations in play. Mayo Gaels, however, are operating at the other end of the table and they, too, need a win to confirm promotion to division one so the Sarsfields have it all on as they need to find a season’s best to upset the formbook and stave off the threat of relegation.

Sarsfields U14s cruise to victory

Charlestown Sarsfields U14 team cruised to victory in the East Mayo U14C championship, defeating Aghamore emphatically in round one played at the Aghamore GAA grounds recently. The Sarsfields were much too good for the hosts and while they took their time to assert their dominance, a glut of goals towards the end of the first half put them in control as the home side’s challenge visibly wilted thereafter.

Goals from Anthony Byrne, Kalem Higgins with two and Conor Davern left the Sarsfields in a strong position at half-time with their lead stretching to double digits as Aghamore struggled to compete in all the key areas of the pitch.

The second half saw more of the same as the Sarsfields continued to pile on the pressure as the scoreboard continued to move in one direction only. Further scores from Joe Irwin, Anthony Byrne, Caelan Egan, Luke McDermott and a tour de force from Tadhg Drury who weighed in with 4-3 in a terrific second half cameo took the sting out of the contest long before the final whistle.

The Sarsfields wrapped up the contest with a flurry of late scores with Luke McDermott, Kalem Higgins and Ben McDonnell all getting in on the act as the Sarsfields put the seal on a decent team performance as they continue to fire on all fronts at this grade. Aside from the afore-mentioned the likes of Senan Tiernan, Ted Munnelly, Rian O’Grady, Conor Breheny, Luke Murphy, Conor Sloyan, Frank Muldoon and Callum Kenny all played their part in a good team performance as the Sarsfields now fix their thoughts and minds on a clash against the same opposition in the East Mayo U14 A championship in the coming weeks.

Caiseal Gaels record win

Caiseal Gaels began the 2026 county junior hurling championship campaign in some style with a decisive 5-19 to 3-14 over Claremorris played at the Gaels grounds recently. The Gaels played some quality hurling and always held the whip hand over their opponents with the forward line in particular, displaying some razor-sharp accuracy in front of goal. The Gaels will be going all out to have a right cut at winning this championship and they got off to the best possible start and on the evidence of this display they might well be the dark horses as they go into the next round full of confidence on the back of this very good and polished display.

Aghamore win East Mayo derby

Charlestown Sarsfields suffered a dispiriting defeat at the hands of East Mayo neighbours Aghamore in round 8 of division 2 of the county senior league played at Fr O’Hara Park, Charlestown recently. The red and white were much the better team as evidenced by the final score line which read 3-15 to 0-11 in their favour.

This defeat leaves the Sarsfields in a real bind with relegation staring them in the face albeit the margins are tight at the bottom of the table with several teams tied on five points heading into the last round of fixtures next weekend. The Sarsfields were not at full strength, missing their talisman Paul Tiowey with Gareth O’Donnell, Jack Corley, Alan Woods, Niall Fleming and Sean Dunleavy also missing from their line-up.

The Sarsfields made the better start and were 0-5- to 0-2 in front and deservedly so as they moved the ball well though the lines and kicked some fine points with Colm Maye getting the ball rolling with a nice point from play before Matt Lenehan and Paddy Goldrick fired over two a booming two pointer to give the home side`s challenge some real impetus.

Aghamore, with Fergal Boland in their ranks, were slow to start, but gradually warmed to the task and got a real helping hand with the Sarsfields gifting them a goal care of some sloppy defending which hauled them level and undid much of the fine early play from the Sarsfields as the visitors now had a real foot in the contest having looked somewhat sluggish and off the pace previously. The visitors, with Boland becoming a growing influence in the contest, were starting to turn the screw and it came as no surprise when they breached the Sarsfields defence for a second time with Liam Lavin cooly finishing to the net to put them three clear as the Sarsfields struggled to get a handle on Boland and co in the visitors attack. Paddy Joe Dunleavy cracked over a terrific pointer to keep the Sarsfields challenge alive and things should have been better, truth to tell, for the green and white, as a number of pointed attempts dropped short which undermined a lot of their good approach play. The visitors finished the half strongly, however, slotting over the last two points to leave them in a commanding position at the first whistle as they led 2-9 to 0-7 with the Sarsfields having plenty to ponder on over the halftime brew.

The second half proved something of an anti-climax from a Sarsfields perspective as their challenge never got off the ground. Aghamore continued where they left off in the first and exerted a vice-like grip in terms of control, bossing all the key battlegrounds and keeping the scoreboard ticking over when the chances presented themselves. The Sarsfields continued to misfire in front of goal with shots dropping short and going wide of target which drained their confidence with a full twenty minutes having elapsed before they registered their first score.

Aghamore, in contrast, were much more clinical in attack as Boland, continued to exert a major influence in terms of his ability to source possession and use it wisely at all times. The Sarsfields finally broke their duck courtesy of Ruairi Cullen free but Aghamore had long since passed into the distance with their lead having stretched into double digits. A two pointer from Paddy Goldrick briefly offered some respite but it proved consolation in nature as the visitors closed out the match in clinical fashion with their third goal of the night, the culmination of a sweeping four man move as they cut lanes through a tiring and lethargic Sarsfields defence.

The final whistle sounded after the resultant kick-out with the visitors, worthy winners on the night with the Sarsfields left to pick over the bones of a performance that was every bit as disappointing as the final score line would indicate. Those that tried hardest for the Sarsfields included Paddy Joe Dunleavy, Ruairi Cullen, Tadhg Horkan, Eoin Murphy, Ben Crean and Thomas Goldrick with confidence in the squad taking a hit following back to back defeats which have left them in a perilous position heading into the last round of fixtures.

Injuries and unavailability have certainly not helped their cause and they will need to tog strong ahead of the Mayo Gaels showdown with the two week break affording them the opportunity to get some key personnel back on the training paddock with all hands to the pump for the final round. The Sarsfields are capable of getting a result but it will require a season’s best to achieve this but it’s in them if they can find the inspiration with all the leaders in the team needing to step forward and take the responsibility so to speak.

U16s defeat Swinford in East A Championship

Charlestown Sarsfields began their East Mayo A U16 championship campaign with a morale boosting 2-11 to 0-12 victory over Swinford in round one played at Robert McCallion GAA grounds, Swinford recently. The Sarsfields went into the game on the back of a disappointing league campaign, but they fronted up from the throw-in and took the game to the hosts in every line of the field. They moved the ball well from back to front and scored two crucial goals, one in each half which proved pivotal to the final outcome.

The goal scorers were Brian Egan and Adam Doherty with both neatly taken on what was a very positive evening for the green and white. Best for the Sarsfields were Fionn Drury, Jack Burke, Artiom Gavriliuc, Dylan Pilcher, Sean Cassidy, Adam Hunt, Jack Healy and Brian Egan.

Soccer

Charlestown Athletic’s unbeaten run in division 2 of the Mayo Soccer league came to an end when they lost 3-0 away to Ballinrobe Town in the latest round of fixtures played recently. Charlestown were not at their best on the day and paid the price as the home side were much sharper throughout the field and coasted to a deserved victory. This defeat dealt a blow to Charlestown Athletic’s promotion hopes but they can get back on track in their next outing at home to Fahy Rovers. They also have a chance to get their revenge on Ballinrobe Town in the upcoming McDonnell Cup final which takes place in Milebush Park, Castlebar, on Sunday, July 5.

Well done and congratulations to the Charlestown U15 soccer team who captured the Mayo U15 shield with a towering 4-0 victory over Ballyglass in a one-sided final played at the Westport Utd soccer grounds recently. Charlestown FC were much too good for their opposition with a brace each from Luke McDermott and Mikey Larkin due reward for an impressive performance from a very good and skilful group of players. This success was much deserved as they played Ballyglass off the park and well done to the coaches who had the team in tip-top shape as they rose to the occasion and delivered on their obvious potential to turn in a most assured and convincing display. Well done to Luke McDermott who received the player of the match award on the back of a splendid display in what was a good afternoon for all associated with the team and Charlestown Athletic FC.

Darts

There was a big turnout for the weekly darts competition held in Walsh’s Public House, Main Street, Charlestown, on Sunday night, June 21 last as The Dynamo and Boom Boom went toe to toe in another intriguing instalment of the weekly classic. Governor Gus was immense as always in his role as referee and kept law and order seamlessly. Boom Boom was on from the first dart and blew away his opponent in the opening two sets with some ridiculous throwing. He never allowed the Dynamo a sniff of an opportunity as he nailed every double with utter precision. The Dynamo rallied in the third set and found some semblance of form to take it to a fourth, but Boom Boom re-discovered his devastating form of sets one and two and closed it out in four as he reeled off three legs in a row to complete a terrific performance and clinch his fifth victory of the season. The Dynamo, while disappointed to lose, was honest to admit he wasn’t in the same zone as his opponent and was quick to proffer his congratulations with both men sharing a warm handshake as they chatted deep into the night with Boom Boom happy to be back on top of the pile.
